Using Hot Dip Galvanized Steel Coil as the substrate, PPGI is made by first going through surface pre-treatment, then the coating of one or more layers of liquid coating by roll coating, and finally baking and cooling. The coatings used to include polyester, silicon modified polyester, high-durability, corrosion-resistance and formability.

PPGI is an industrial steel product with multiple uses. It is a form of galvaized iron that is also dipped into zinc. However, the zinc coat is pre-painted in the factory instead of wait until after the steel is formed. Applying a zinc coat prevents rusting. PPGI is also known as metallic coated steels, or pre-coated steel. This product will typically come in the form of a coil. This steel is often not costly and can last for a long period of time.

The hot dip metallic coating process is also used to manufacture steel sheet and coil with coatings of aluminium, or alloy coatings of zinc/aluminium, zinc/iron and zinc/aluminium/magnesium which may also be factory pre-painted. While GI may sometimes be used as a collective term for various hot dip metallic coated steels, it more precisely refers only to zinc coated steel. Similarly, PPGI may sometimes be used as a general term for a range of metallic coated steels that have been pre-painted, but more often refers more precisely to pre-painted zinc coated steel.
