Stainless steel pipe is widely used in piping systems for conveying fluids or gases. It is made from an alloy that contains nickel and chromium, which gives it corrosion-resistant properties. Moreover, stainless steel pipe has low maintenance because it is highly resistant to oxidation, even at high temperature and chemical environments. Additionally, food and beverage industries as well as pharmaceuticals prefer stainless steel pipe because of its low contamination when they are washed and sanitized.
This type of pipe can be manufactured using several processes, either welding or extrusion. The welding process requires the shaping of steel into a pipe shape and joining its seams. The extrusion process involves heat treatment combined with piercing of a steel rod to be formed into a pipe. The terms “pipe” and “tube” are often confused, but they should be distinguished. Steel pipes are connected according to internal diameter (ID), whereas steel tubes are measured by external diameter (OD) and the wall thickness. Pipes are made to transfer fluids or gases, while tubes are made for manufacturing components with a definite structure.
